Ran errands today

So far so normal, you're thinking; isn't that what just about everybody does? Aye, they do; however in my case my balance is so badly shot that I need to walk using sticks to keep myself upright. This, along with an inability to carry much, gives you an idea of how difficult it is.

On top of this is the fact I've done something to my lower back that means it hurts every time I'm not super careful about how I move and hold my body. Yippee.

Still. I managed to make my purchases at the pharmacy, and get my business done at the post office, without seeming to damage myself any further. Which is more than I thought I'd manage when faced with having to leave the house today. Maybe things are on the up?

comments

A little bit of change does nobody any harm.

I ditched Facebook this week, or at least deactivated it. And this afternoon I took everything off my Livejournal account, because most of it is LGBT+ friendly and the laws of the Russian Federation (where Livejournal servers are) are anything but. I may, at some point in the future, delete both.

On top of that, I went through the privacy settings on my Google accounts and cut off their access to my data as much as I can. I need a rethink of my Google Drive contents as well, but there's no way I can delete all of that just yet without an alternative storage option in place.

Now to figure out how to keep my Pinterest and Goodreads accounts going now I'm not using Facebook.

comments

Caspian/Edmund: A Smoke Raised with the Fume of Sighs

Title: A Smoke Raised with the Fume of Sighs
Characters: Caspian X, Edmund Pevensie
Relationship: Edmund/Caspian
Setting: Dawn Treader
Notes: Filmverse; in this story, as in the film, Deathwater and Dragon Island are one and the same. The title comes from Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare.
Rating: M
Warnings: None
Disclaimer: Characters you recognise belong to C. S.
Caspian/Edmund: Aeternitas

Title: Aeternitas
Characters: Caspian X, Edmund Pevensie
Relationship: Edmund/Caspian
Setting: Silver Chair, I suppose. Sort of.
Notes: Filmverse casting. A wild AU, given how The Silver Chair and The Last Battle deal with the respective deaths of Caspian and Edmund. But I don’t care. I wanted to write a Caspian allowed to die with the Edmund he remembers, and is haunted by, at his side when it happens. The title is the Latin word for eternity. The quote at the beginning comes from the song You Raise Me Up by Secret Garden.
Rating: M
Warnings: Major Character Death
Summary: Caspian is close enough to eternity that he can almost touch and taste it.

( It's the end of days. )

comments

Caspian/Edmund: Decisions [drabble]

Title: Decisions
Characters: Caspian X, Other(s) (mentioned)
Relationships: Edmund/Caspian
Setting: Dawn Treader
Notes: Filmverse, although the encounter with the Sea Serpent is in its bookverse setting. This happens in the same timeline as, and is set between, Light & Shadow and Reality Check.
Rating: M
Warnings: None
Summary: Some decisions are difficult; this was never one of them.

You make up your mind; you can’t leave him, not when he’s still unconscious and nobody knows when (or if) he’ll wake.

So your court, such as exists on this tiny sovereign piece of Narnia floating on the open sea, will have to come to you.

You’ve decided.

If they need to see you (or have you sign anything, although why that’s necessary, when that was the whole point of installing Trumpkin as Regent, is beyond your comprehension), they know where you are. You owe Edmund this much, at least. If not more.

You can’t, and you won’t, leave him.

comments

Book Review: Somewhere Inside of Happy, by Anna McPartlin

Somewhere Inside of Happy by Anna McPartlin

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

This took longer to hook me than I thought it would, and at the beginning (before Jeremy Bean's absence is noticed) there was a whole lot of stuff happening that didn't interest me much.

It picks up. And then we find out what happened to Jeremy, and it's heartbreaking. I'd figured out who was involved, by that time, but I was wrong about the how and the bizarre inanity of the surrounding circumstances and how utterly destroyed the other person involved is by it make it even bleaker than it already is.

I hesitate to say I 'like' a book about serious topics like this one, for obvious reasons. But this is a sensitive treatment of the issue and well-written.

comments

Book Review: The Wild Girl by Kate Forsyth

The Wild Girl by Kate Forsyth

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Overall, I like this book.

I did not know that Dortchen Wild and Wilhelm Grimm were married in real life when I read this for the first time, so the part towards the end when she is free of her father made for anxious reading; I was glad to discover they did marry, and the quote from Wilhelm's autobiography makes it seem that it was a happy marriage.

Herr Wild, Dortchen's father, is so very possessive of his daughters in the story that it raised a red flag pretty much straight away, and those parts of the story are very dark indeed. Other darkness, from the seeming never-ending wars and the constant shifting of control of the area between German, French, and Russian power was well done, and I learnt a few things about herbology in passing that I hadn't known before.

comments

Book Review: Dear Lucy, by Julie Sarkissian

The first thing you need to know (given my current obsession with Narnia) is the Lucy of this book is not Lucy Pevensie!

Dear Lucy by Julie Sarkissian

My rating: 1 of 5 stars

There are things I like about this book - the main narrator (there are three, but the developmentally-disabled titular character takes up the majority of the book), and the talking chicken.

Other than that, this book is full to the brim of WTFery. The true story of what happened to Stella at the hands of Mister, seemingly choreographed by Missus and of which we never get the full details but we see enough to guess at the true horror, is the main one but Lucy's mother appears to be an absolute piece of work as well.

I don't think this is a book I ever want to re-read.

comments

Caspian/Edmund: (Je N’ai Pas Oublié) La Chanson Que Tu Me Chantais

Title: (Je N’ai Pas Oublié) La Chanson Que Tu Me Chantais
Characters: Caspian X, Other(s) Mentioned
Pairing: Edmund/Caspian, Caspian & Ramandu’s Daughter
Setting: Post-Voyage of the Dawn Treader
Rating: T
Warnings: None
A/N: I have tried to ship Caspian with Ramandu’s Daughter, but it doesn’t work for me. As a King, however, Caspian has little choice about whether he marries; this might help explain some of his behaviour here. The title is from the poem Les Feuilles Mortes by Jacques Prévert.
Summary: He’s no longer here, but that doesn’t mean you aren’t still in love with him.

( If anything, the opposite is true. )

comments

Title: This Is Home
Warnings: None
Notes: Filmverse. Lewis.
Character(s): Caspian X, Edmund Pevensie, Other(s)
Pairing(s): Caspian/Edmund Pevensie
Rating: T
Summary: You’re making the conscious decision your unconscious mind reached weeks ago: you cannot leave him.

( The Lion pronounces it time for you to leave, never to return to Narnia. )

comments
